Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo

The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, the jewel of Ravenna, is famous for its magnificent early Christian and Byzantine mosaics. Erected by the Gothic king Theodoric in the 6th century, originally as an Arian temple, it was later reconsecrated to the Catholic faith. The interior walls narrate, through a rich mosaic of biblical scenes and a procession of saints and martyrs, the spiritual and artistic greatness of late antiquity. The basilica, with its long nave and brilliant mosaics, invites a journey through time, testifying to the depth of Christian faith and the artistic excellence of Ravenna.

Mausoleum of Galla Placidia

The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, one of Ravenna's treasures, dates back to the mid-5th century. Although not confirmed as the burial place of Galla Placidia, the building is famous for its mosaics that symbolize the victory of eternal life over death. The rich and ornate interior contrasts with the sober exterior. The mausoleum, located near the Basilica of San Vitale, was originally connected to the church of Santa Croce.

Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe

The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe in Ravenna is a masterpiece of Italian Byzantine art. Built in the 6th century to house the remains of the city's patron saint, it still retains its original structure and magnificent mosaics, despite the spoliations it has suffered. Prominent among the mosaics is that of St. Apollinaris at Prayer. The basilica, with its imposing facade, is considered the greatest example of an early Christian basilica in existence. It is located 5 km south of Ravenna, in the small town of Classe.
